The voice of Youth

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Strikes with millions of young people around the world demonstrate the importance of giving them a voice in how we handle that change.

During the Youth for Climate Adaptation Conference on January 22, 2021 in Groningen, young people from all over the world will have the opportunity to come together (online) and work on their contributions to the Climate Adaptation Summit. This world summit will take place on January 25, 2021. During this event, world leaders will come together to discuss climate adaptation, make agreements and turn to action. Youth will be given the opportunity to express a text or call to action, which can be adopted by the Summit as a joint declaration.

The youth summit will be organized on behalf of the Municipality of Groningen, the Province of Groningen and the Global Center on Adaptation. During the event, we’ll bring youth from all corners of the globe together to talk about climate adaptation. These talks will be focused on three themes:

  • Connect – Young people who are interested in or working with climate adaptation should be connected throughout the world.
  • Exchange – we need to raise awareness on climate change and exchange knowledge, experiences and skills that young people have on the topic.
  • Message – it is important that these young people and their knowledge and experience are brought together in a joint message that can be shared during the Summit. This way youth from all over the world can be mobilized and inspired for local interventions.

All of this takes place in the city of Groningen, where we’ll bring young people from the region and the rest of the world together, physically and online.

Youth for Climate Adaptation Conference

Young people have a very important role during the Climate Adaptation Week. And they deserve to have that, as there’s no group in society that stands up for climate more than the youth. Youth from Groningen, the Netherlands and countries from all over the world will work on a call to action, which they will present to the world leaders who will gather at the Climate Adaptation Summit.

Youth team: by youth, for youth

Who better to organize a youth-event than young people themselves? That’s why the youth is in the lead and in charge of organizing the event. By youth, for youth, so to say. We have set up various workgroups: each workgroup takes on a specific role, consisting of responsibilities and tasks that are all necessary for a successful youth conference. These roles are: logistics, sustainability, programme, communication, impact and international relations. For more information on these roles and the associated tasks and responsibilities, you can read up on them through this link.
