Bold actions and transformative thinking are urgently required to tackle what has become a worldwide climate emergency. To add new urgency for mobilizing unprecedented efforts, the Netherlands government is hosting an international Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS) including a High-Level Dialogue with Nobel Prize Laureates.
Throughout history, humanity has demonstrated ingenuity and courage as we have adapted to change. We need that commitment and spirit today as the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, and societies are faced with the challenge of building back better and enacting the transitions required for a climate-resilient world.
Recognizing those pioneers who have improved society through knowledge, science and humanism, Climate Adaptation Groningen, in cooperation with the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) and the University of Groningen, will host a High-Level Dialogue with Nobel Prizes Laureates in Groningen on 22 January 2021, convened by the Eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the Board of the GCA, H.E. Ban Ki-moon.
The ceremony will form a core element of the online international Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS Online) to be held on 25 January 2021, the first-ever dedicated platform of global leaders aimed at placing the world firmly on a pathway to accelerated adaptation and resilience. CAS Online will bring together institutions, government leaders, mayors, senior figures from the private sector, civil society and youth movements, and drive the critical changes needed in the way societies manage the effects of our climate emergency.
The Nobel Laureates will contribute their statements as part of the Summit’s efforts to raise global awareness of the need to radically rethink how to protect people, the planet and our prosperity. It will all come together in the 'Groningen Science Statement. '
