Adaptation to climate change

You have to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change and take appropriate measures to minimize the damage. The European Commission has drawn up policy with regard to climate adaptive policy and measures. On this website you can look at the role of the European Commission, how it is funded, the responsibilities, the regions and how the international approach to climate change adaptation, according to the EU should ideally look like. A so-called Common Strategic Framework has been drawn up by the committee for this purpose.

Adaptation strategies are needed

Adaptation strategies are needed at local, regional, national, EU and also international level. The effects of climate change have a different impact per region, so most adaptation initiatives will be taken at regional or local level. The ability to adapt to the climate also differs between population groups, economic sectors and regions within Europe.

Examples of adaptation measures are the more efficient use of water buffers, adapting building regulations to future climate conditions and responding better to extreme weather conditions. This includes constructing flood defences, raising dikes and choosing tree species and crops that are less vulnerable to storms and forest fires.

EU adaptation Strategy

The Commission adopted an EU adaptation strategy in April 2013 which has been welcomed by the Member States. Complementing the activities of Member States, the strategy supports action by promoting greater coordination and information-sharing between Member States, and by ensuring that adaptation considerations are addressed in all relevant EU policies.

The EU’s role can be particularly appropriate when climate change impacts transcend borders of individual states - such as with river basins - and when impacts vary considerably across regions. The role of the EU can be especially useful to enhance solidarity among Member States and ensure that disadvantaged regions and those most affected by climate change are capable of taking the necessary measures to adapt.
